Iran Colon, 32, an officer who was based at the Taconic Correctional Facility in Bedford Hills pleaded guilty late last year to promoting prison contraband and criminal sexual act, both felonies, after being arrested in his Staten Island home in May.
On Tuesday, July 2, Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino, Jr., announced that Colon has been sentenced to a term of between one and three years in state prison for promoting prison contraband and one year in jail for the criminal sexual act charge. Both sentences will run concurrently.
Colon was one of three officers - including Garth Trail, and Melissa Hill, who were arrested for their roles in three separate incidents - including alleged rape - involving inmates last year.
In May last year, Colon, who served as a guard, was arraigned on a 19-count indictment and was charged with seven counts of official misconduct, five counts of third-degree rape, four counts of criminal sexual act and three counts of first-degree promoting prison contraband, all felonies. His illicit activities at the correctional facility spanned from May 1 through Sept. 27 in 2017.
Colon was suspended without pay on May 2, 2018. Trail, a former head cook at the Taconic Correctional Facility was charged with criminal sexual act after being involved with an inmate in the kitchen. Hill, a former corrections officer, allegedly engaged in a romantic relationship with an inmate. Trail is scheduled to be sentenced on Tuesday, July 23.
